2013 Windale Men's Shed - Update
The last twelve months has been a very busy and beneficial period for the Windale men’s shed.
As an example, we’re very pleased to report on three good news stories for the shed. Firstly, we were selected by the Charlestown Branch of the Commonwealth Bank as the recipient of an award for goods to the value of $1000.00 as part of the Bank’s celebration of 100 years as a financial institute in Australia. A big thank you goes to bank branch’s Manager and staff for their community support.
Secondly, the Windale shed was selected in the top three in the State by the NSW/ACT Regional Achievement and Awards body for the Community of the Year – Population over 15000 Category. We attended the presentation dinner at Orange and although we didn’t take out first place, we were very pleased to have reached that level of recognition by an independent body.
Thirdly, to assist the Minimbah team’s Aboriginal Education Officer, we part sponsored the inaugural presentation night held at Hunter Sports High (Gateshead) to recognise the high achievements for the members of the group. Secretary Mo (Roger Lowe) did the association proud by presenting certificates for one of the categories.
We have also been able to establish a partnership with Masters Home Improvements from Rutherford. The manager visited our shed on invitation and offered a donation of a four stroke mower for our Christmas raffle. We anticipate a good continued relationship with Masters during 2013 in anticipation of the establishment of a new branch nearby in the not too distant future.
Several presentations on the Windale men’s shed and the shed concept have been made across the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie area to other not for profit organisations such as Rotary and the Freemasons to name a few, which helps to spread the word and understanding of the men’s shed vision. In addition, we have been able to assist with the establishment of a new men’s shed with donations of machinery and tools as well as a monetary donation toward the cost of their insurance.
A central storage facility has again been achieved thanks to a generous donation of SAFE N SOUND Self Storage at Kotara which is used, and available, for limited storage for the Zone. We are still collecting useful items from the community for distribution.
There has been a lot of member activity in regard to fitting out the new extension in terms of storage space, painting etc. and income earning projects. Members were involved recently in a hearing assessment program conducted by Australian Hearing which was a very useful service.
‘Till next time
